- KwiKey Keyboard speed up for PC Emulator
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-
- Although the PC Emulator is rather slow a dramatic (apparent) speed
- increase can be obtained by speeding up the keyboard repeat rate.
-
- The XT computer has a repeat rate of 9 characters per second which is
- very slow. With AT's and all later PC's this could be speeded up but on
- the XT, which the Emulator imitates, it is fixed.
-
- It is however possible to load a TSR (Terminate and Stay Resident)
- program which can double this speed. The program 'KwiKey' will do this.
- To use it you must first copy it to a PC format disk. Once you have done
- this you must rename it KWIKEY.COM because it can't have the 'COM'
- extension on an Archimedes disk but it must have that extension to work
- on a PC.
-
- With the Emulator running put a disc with KWIKEY.COM on it in the
- current drive and type 'KWIKEY'. You will find that your keyboard repeat
- rate has doubled!. If that's not fast enough just repeat the action to
- Load and Run KWIKEY twice. Be careful about this 4 times speed increase
- because the PC's keyboard buffer is very small and with an ARM 2 it will
- very soon overflow at this speed. Each time you load KWIKEY it will take
- up about 3/4K of memory which is not a lot to sacrifice.
-
- The apparent speed increase with KWIKEY is amazing when running a
- wordprocessor or spreadsheet where you need to use the arrow keys.
- Moving about the screen is much faster and although the program itself
- is no quicker it feel as if it is.
